The White Rock Museum & Archives has honoured Lorraine Ellenwood by naming the archives vault after her. The announcement was made at the museum’s annual general meeting on August 18th, 2015.
The archives vault is a state of the art climate controlled room that houses precious historical records of White Rock. Hundreds of thousands of documents, photographs, maps, sound recordings and videos are housed in the vault. From now on it will be known as the “Lorraine Ellenwood Archives Vault” in her honour.
Ellenwood began as a volunteer archivist at the WRMA in 1976. In 1983 she became the museum curator. From 1986 to 1997 she was the director of the museum and the first professionally trained staff member. After her retirement in 1997 she was made Director Emerita and she still volunteers for the museum on a regular basis and serves as a mentor for the current staff.
"Lorraine has been an outstanding example of a true custodian of White Rock’s history, and an excellent consultant and mentor to those of us who continue this work. It is a pleasure to honour her contributions to the White Rock Museum & Archives Society in this way”. – Sharon Oldaker, WRMA Executive Director.
“The new vault is the heart and soul of the archives. It was built on a foundation of excellence long established in this institution by Lorraine. It is a fitting reminder of this to name the new vault after her.” – Hugh Ellenwood, WRMA Archives Manager.

Imagine: one doctor to serve the entire municipality of Surrey, including White Rock, and no hospital. Sounds crazy, but it was the reality for residents up until the 1940s. When Royal Columbian Hospital restricted services to only residents north of the Fraser River in 1946, Surrey was forced to find alternative health care. This is where the plan for a hospital in White Rock was born.
Critical Care: A History of Hospitals in a Border Town discusses how early settlers of South Surrey and White Rock received medical care and how community need, passion, and dedication helped drive the construction of what is now Peace Arch Hospital.
Included in the exhibit are early medical artifacts from throughout the lower mainland, many donated by the late Dr. Allan Hogg. Nursing uniforms and photographs are also included. Children will enjoy activities such as magnetic skeleton building, interactive cube display, and medical equipment guessing game. In addition, there are two historical lectures scheduled for the event:
Sunday March 1st: Peace Arch Hospital & Auxiliary History with Ellen Kennett & Vin Coyne, 1pm-3pm
Sunday April 19th : History of Nursing in Canada Presentation & Fashion Show by the BC History of Nursing Society, 1pm-3pm
Also featured in the exhibit is a video compilation by local artist Sherron Fairbairn.
For more information on Sherron, please check out her website: http://sherron.ca/
The exhibit will run from January 17th to May 31st, 2015. Admission is by donation. With thanks to our sponsors: The Hogg Family, White Rock Medical Society, Peace Arch News (2015 Print Media Sponsor), BMO Semiahmoo Branch (2015 Event Napkin Sponsor), Charlie Don’t Surf (2015 Reception Sponsor) and the City of White Rock. "Passenger", the bronze statue that was recently installed on the Museum plaza is a permanent installation which was commissioned by the City of White Rock. The artist, Denis Kleine, hails from Nelson, BC, and is well respected for his outstanding bronze public art pieces. This piece depicts a passenger waiting beside a bench with a suitcase at the White Rock train station. It invites passersby to stop and pause on the bench, perhaps take a photo and enjoy the view! Of course it is a perfect waterside entrance to the Museum & Archives. The City and Museum will be hosting a public unveiling of the statue on Saturday, January 24th at 2:00 pm and the artist will be in a attendance at that time.
